A 55-year-old man was arrested Monday morning after allegedly attempting to abduct a toddler at Skinner Butte Park in Eugene, Oregon.

Eugene Police responded to the park at 248 Cheshire Avenue around 10:11 a.m. on August 5 following multiple reports of a physical altercation and concerns of a child kidnapping. When officers arrived, they found Anthony Wayne Reed, 55, on top of a 74-year-old man who had reportedly tried to stop him from taking the child.

Witnesses told police that the victim had been at the park with his 19-month-old grandchild when Reed, a stranger, suddenly approached and picked up the child. He began walking away with the toddler, claiming he was trying to “get the child help” and insisting he knew the parents.

The grandfather, who had no prior relationship with Reed, attempted to intervene. Police say Reed overpowered him and briefly strangled him. Bystanders quickly stepped in, rescuing the child and separating the two men before officers arrived.

When confronted by police, Reed was described as disorderly and incoherent. He was taken into custody and lodged at the Lane County Jail. He faces multiple charges, including Kidnapping, Strangulation, and Disorderly Conduct. Police also discovered Reed had an outstanding warrant for Failure to Appear related to a previous Violation of Park Rules.

Eugene Police have not released further information about Reed’s motives, and the investigation is ongoing.
