After a grueling 12-hour road trip filled with endless stretches of highway and way too many gas station hot dogs, Mark and Susan Reynolds were looking forward to a peaceful night’s rest. What they didn’t expect was a “charming vintage experience” that would transport them back in time, courtesy of the unmistakable scent of stale cigarettes in their Redmond, Oregon motel room.
“When we opened the door, it hit us like a warm hug from the past,” said Susan. “It reminded me of my childhood summers at my aunt’s house—the one who chain-smoked indoors and kept plastic covers on all her furniture. It was oddly comforting.”
The couple had booked the room at the Cascade Pines Motor Lodge, a self-described “retro retreat” that boasts glowing online reviews praising its “throwback vibes.” At $249 a night, the price seemed steep for a place with peeling paint and a buzzing neon sign, but Mark admitted that the ambiance exceeded their expectations.
“We were too tired to care at first,” said Mark, sipping on a coffee from a Styrofoam cup provided by the front desk. “But the longer we sat there, the more we appreciated the effort that went into creating such an authentic, mid-century experience. It’s like the walls themselves had stories to tell—and most of those stories involved Marlboros.”
The "charming vintage room" featured what the couple described as “carefully curated” design elements: wood-paneled walls, a suspiciously stained recliner, and a rotary phone that may or may not have worked. But it was the cigarette scent that really brought the space to life. “The air had that rich, layered complexity of decades past,” Susan explained. “It’s not something you can fake with one of those plug-in air fresheners.”

The motel’s manager, Linda Perkins, took great pride in the couple’s praise. “We’ve worked hard to maintain the authenticity of our property,” Linda said, gesturing to the ashtrays still bolted to the nightstands. “We call it ‘nostalgic preservation.’ Sure, some people complain, but we believe it’s all about the experience. You can’t recreate history without a little nicotine in the air.”
Social media users were quick to react when the couple shared their story online. Some applauded the quirky charm of the motel, while others raised concerns about air quality and hygiene. The motel responded by doubling down on its branding, updating its website to feature the tagline: ‘Cascade Pines: Where Time Stands Still (and So Does the Smoke).’
“We were just looking for a place to crash,” Mark said, “but we left with a memory we’ll treasure forever. Who needs a spa or a fancy hotel breakfast when you can wake up in a room that smells like a 1980s poker night?”
Susan agreed, adding, “It wasn’t just a motel stay—it was a trip down memory lane. Honestly, we’ll probably come back. You can’t get this kind of charm from a corporate chain.”
As they packed up to leave, Susan took one last deep breath, savoring the atmosphere. “I don’t know if it’s the nostalgia or the exhaustion talking,” she said, “but this place feels like home.”
