33-mile Rim Drive Around Crater Lake Opens for Summer

If you are thinking about visiting Crater Lake, now is the time as park officials announced Thursday that the whole 33-mile Rim Drive around the magical national park is now open for the season. Most of the facilities and services at the park are also said to be open.

“Visitors can enjoy spectacular views of Crater Lake from many vista points along this scenic drive and escape the heat of lower elevations. Wildflowers are beginning to emerge as the snow continues to melt,”Crater Lake National Park said.

For the time being, the 16-site Lost Creek Campground remains closed, although according to officials, Lost Creek would be open for dry camping — with no water or campfires — the following week.

“Most hiking trails in the park are now open, but many still have small patches of snow,” park officials said. “Come to the park to enjoy a boat tour, trolley ride or other ranger-led programs.”

“Visitors can enjoy spectacular views of Crater Lake from many vista points along this scenic drive and escape the heat of lower elevations,” National Park staff said in a press release. “Wildflowers are beginning to emerge as the snow continues to melt.”

At this time the Watchman Peak Trail remains covered with snow and will require more melting before its completely open to the public.
