Last Wednesday, June 14, Portlander Jeffrey Smith discovered an obscure 18-foot-long wooden object near the Taft Street access in Cannon Beach. The Daily Astorian reports that the slab may be part of a keel from a shipwreck.

Queried specialists speculate that the object could date as far back as the 1800s, although they also admit that it could also be from the 2011 tsunami that washed debris onto the Oregon coast.

If the object is determined valuable enough to conserve, it will make the long trip down to a conservation lab in Texas.
